Let me introduce myself

My name is Sue Blanco and I am your new synagogue president, though I am probably not a stranger to most of you. I have been a part of this congregation since 1973; many of you may remember me when I was Susan Carchman. At that time, my family moved to Springfield and my parents joined what was then Temple Beth Ahm. I attended the Religious School, had my bat mitzvah here and went on to post bat mitzvah studies. I was also a Kadimanik and an active USYer.

Like many kids who grew up in a small town, I left for college and thought that I would never return. But the values of a teenager are very different than those of a young adult. So when it came time to buy a home with my husband, Mariano, at his urging, we purchased a home in Springfield. In addition to good schools, affordable housing values, and relatively low taxes for the area, it also offered proximity to future babysitters (my parents), an active Jewish community and a synagogue we both knew that we felt comfortable with, Temple Beth Ahm.

While we moved to Springfield in 1995, it wasn’t until 2001 that I stopped attending High Holiday services on a guest ticket purchased by my parents, and came as a member of what is now Temple Beth Ahm Yisrael. That was the year our oldest son, Zach entered Kindergarten and started religious school. Five years later his younger brother Ethan joined him.

In the 13 years that my family has been members of TBAY we have truly come to feel that this community is our home. We have seen a number of wonderful changes during this time, and feel that our relationship with TBAY has grown with this community.

In the next two years, I look forward to seeing our community find more ways to engage our members, as we build on all the work that has been done in the past few years to secure our bright future. Watch for this space as I announce new programs in the upcoming months.

B’Shalom
Sue Blanco
