Sukkot has many names: Chag haSukkot (the Festival of Booths), Z’man Simchateinu (Time of our Rejoicing), and Chag HaAsif (Festival of Ingathering). By commanding us to live in temporary dwellings, Sukkot allows us to connect with how the Israelites must have felt as they wandered in the desert. We learn about the four species: etrog (citron), lulav (palm frond), three hadassim (myrtle twigs) and two aravot (willow twigs). We chant from the Torah, sing hoshanot (prayers for salvation, sung while waving the four species) and chant a complete Hallel (songs of praise). If you have never been to a Sukkot service, you are in for a treat!
We would like to invite you to observe the mitzvah (commandment) of dwelling in the sukkah by coming and having a snack in our sukkah with your family!
We have set up a small sukkah on the lawn near the splash pad for us all to share. You are welcome to come with your family to celebrate the festival. You do not need to sign up, but we ask that if another family is in the sukkah that you give them time to finish before entering. Our Men’s Club builds a giant sukkah in our courtyard and we have meals, events and religious school classes there. Chag Sukkot Sameach!
